Finternet: The Financial System for the Future
April 15, 2024 — Agustín Carstens, General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements, and Nandan Nilekani outline a vision for a ‘Finternet,’ akin to the Internet but for finance, aiming to empower individuals and businesses by integrating various financial ecosystems. This system would leverage existing cryptographic technologies combined with a clear regulatory framework to transform the current financial system into one that is cheaper and more efficient. While Carstens and Nilekani acknowledge that the implementation of ‘Finternet’ may require some trial-and-error, they believe that their vision of a more inclusive financial system is possible.
